PSA Annual Meeting 2008

New Orleans, Louisiana

Habitat for Humanity Post-Meeting Activity

The 2008 PSA Annual Meeting ends with the banquet on Wednesday evening, July 30th. For those who choose to stay an extra day we have arranged a workday with Habitat For Humanity Workday, Thursday, July 31.

Note: You must register for this activity if you wish to participate! We cannot provide transportation, lunch and a work site unless we know how many will take part.

Cost: lunch, water and transportation to the work site will be provided. You probably will need to arrange your transportation and housing to the meeting so that you can stay an extra day after the meeting as ended.

Maximum Capacity is 75. If more than 75 attempt to register we will work hard to find additional work sites to accommodate every person who desires to volunteer.  As you know the 2005 flooding by hurricane Katrina from breached levees devastated New Orleans. Subsequently, many conferences and meetings in New Orleans have included a volunteer workday to help with the reconstruction effort. Jim Wee, the local organizer for the 2008 PSA meeting, has arranged a volunteer workday with Habitat for Humanity on the day after the meeting ends. The PSA is providing lunches and water and Loyola University is providing transportation. So, the only costs to PSA volunteers are for an extra night in New Orleans.

Pick up times will be finalized at a later date, but could be as early as 6:45 AM on Thursday, July 31. Twelve passenger vans will be used to transport PSA volunteers from the pick-up sites on St. Charles Ave. If you are staying at the Best Western St. Charles Inn or Hampton Inn meet in front of the Hampton Inn at 3626 St. Charles Ave. Please note that the Best Western St. Charles at 3636 St. Charles Ave is nearly next door to the Hampton Inn. If you are staying in the Loyola residence hall, pick up will be on St. Charles Ave. in front of the horseshoe-shaped driveway on the Loyola campus (6363 St. Charles Ave.). Breakfast will not be provided. So, grab something to eat before departing. We are not expecting PSA volunteers to have construction skills. If you do have construction skills please notify the HFH supervisor when you arrive at the work site.

Safety Issues: You will arrive on the site at about 7:45 AM and work until 3:15 PM. Eat breakfast before you leave. It will be hot with temperatures in the high 80s or low 90s and humid! Hourly water breaks are mandatory. You will be participating in housing construction and should dress appropriately. Bring cool protective clothing.  Closed-toed shoes are required (no sandals!), and if you have them bring steel-toed shoes. Depending upon the weather sunglasses, sun screen, insect repellant and rain jacket may be a good idea. If you wear shorts and a short-sleeved shirt, you may want to bring long pants and long sleeves with you in case you feel the need to change. You will be asked to sign a liability waiver.
